At least three people were killed when a small plane veered off the runway while taking off and hit two parked helicopters at Lukla airport in Nepal's Everest region on Sunday, officials said.

The incident took place as the aircraft lost control on the runway while preparing to take off and hit two parked helicopters.

Following the crash, authorities suspended services at Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. The co-pilot of the plane, which was operated by the private airline Summit Air, was killed along with two security guards on the ground.

The airport, which is also known by the name of its host town, Lukla, was shut down after the incident.

Four of the passengers and a flight attendant on board the plane were safe, civil administrator Narendra Kumar Rama said.

Because of the extreme danger of flying in the mountains of Nepal, AirlineRatings.com does not safety rate any airlines or helicopter companies in the country.

The airport in Lukla is often referred to as the world's most unsafe because of the short runway and hard approach.

It's open only to helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft and sits at 9,334 feet.

Hundreds of foreign climbers head to the mountain region in April to climb Mount Everest during the commercial expedition season, which lasts until May.

The European Union has banned all Nepalese Airline flights on its airspace over safety concerns.

Seven people, including the country's tourism minister, were killed in February when a helicopter crashed in the hilly east.
