Four die in Sudan protests as military rulers say won't allow 'chaos'

Lt. Gen. Shams Al-Deen Al-Kabashi, a spokesman for the military council, said Monday's meeting between army rulers and protest leaders, the first in over a week, was held "in a more optimistic atmosphere".

The Sudan Doctors Committee, which is part of the Sudanese Professionals Association that has been spearheading the protests since December, reported the four fatalities after initially saying there were six.

Since then, protesters have been camping outside the military headquarters to support a civilian-led political transition.

Protesters said counter-revolutionaries linked to the former regime were inciting violence. There has been no comment from Bashir, who is in prison in Khartoum.

The Transitional Military Council plans to remain in power for two years, but protesters and many in the global community want it replaced with a civilian government.

The charges against Bashir came during an investigation into the death of a medic who was killed during a protest in the capital's eastern district of Burri.

For a second day on Monday demonstrators blocked Nile Street, a major avenue running south of the Blue Nile, placing burning branches and stones across the road, as well as several other streets north and south of the river.

A new analysis suggests that the moon may still be shrinking today and actively producing moonquakes along these thrust faults. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this view of the Taurus-Littrow valley, which features a scarp cutting across it.

Earlier, the military council and the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, a civilian body including the SPA, said an agreement had finally been made on the makeup and structure of a transitional joint civilian and military authority.

On Monday afternoon, the military used tear gas and force to disperse protesters from the Mek Nimr bridge, and attempted to dismantle barricades on Nile Street.

Burhan pointed to the peaceful character of the Sudanese revolution, adding: "The army is committed to protecting the protesters and we will arrest the perpetrators and we will hold them accountable".

The ruling military council confirmed the death of an army major and said three troops were wounded at the sit-in.

Late last month, the alliance - which brings together protest organisers, opposition parties and rebel groups - handed the generals its proposals for a civilian-led transitional government.

They have singled out its silence on the constitutional position of Islamic sharia law, which was the guiding principle of all legislation under Bashir's rule but is anathema to secular groups like the Sudanese Communist Party and some rebel factions in the alliance. Bashir cracked down hard on protesters until he was removed by the military last month.

The killings took place after nightfall on Monday, when protests in Sudan usually swell during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is marked by dawn-to-dusk fasting.
