NASA says the moon is shrinking and experiencing "moonquakes"

SHRIVELLING The Moon is wrinkling like a raisin as its core shrinks SHRIVELLING The Moon is wrinkling like a raisin as its core shrinks

This in turn causes its surface to wrinkle, similar to a grape that shrivels into a raisin.

"Some of these quakes can be fairly strong, around five on the Richter Scale".

This is because the core is cooling, which causes the surface to crack, creating step-like cliffs called "scarps".

The space agency also revealed the new mission's name will be Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and twin sister of Apollo.

It is measured on a machine called a seismograph. A paper describing the work, co-authored by Schmerr, was published in the journal Nature Geoscience on May 13, 2019.

USA astronauts placed seismometers on the lunar surface during the Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 missions, recording 28 shallow quakes up to nearly 5 magnitude, which is moderate strength.

Watters hopes the LRO team will be able to re-analyse fault scarps imaged by the orbiter since 2009 to find evidence of movement-that would be a smoking gun signature, he said. It is quite likely that fracture zones are still active today, - said Schmerr.

"You don't often get to see active tectonics anywhere but Earth, so it's very exciting to think these faults may still be producing moonquakes", said Nicholas Schmerr in a statement, study author and assistant professor of geology at the University of Maryland.

Simulations determined the chance that coincidence could explain so many shallow quakes occurring near faults during periods of high stress was less than 4 percent. Other events such as meteorite impacts can produce quakes, but those would produce different seismic signatures.

Instead of going directly to the surface of the moon, as NASA did during the Apollo missions of the late 1960s and early 70s, it is instead looking to build a more permanent presence by building an orbiting outpost known as the Gateway.

Bridenstine said that around $1 billion of the additional funding would enable NASA to begin the development of a commercial landing system, which will transport astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface and back. For example, bright patches of ground have been observed near faults, which appear to be patches of lunar regolith that have yet to be darkened by weathering and radiation. Boulder tracks near faults in Schrödinger basin have been attributed to recent boulder falls induced by seismic shaking. The valley was explored in 1972 by the Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt.

The discovery of young faults less than 50 million years old by the LSO's camera in 2010 has been interpreted as evidence of lunar tectonic activity.

This is where additional tidal stress from the Earth's gravity causes a peak in the total stress on the Moon's crust, according to the study.

The revelation comes after NASA announced the Moon is shrinking "like a raisin", triggering earthquakes on the star. "The moon is a three-day journey home, so if something goes wrong, we know we can make it home".

The cliffs that form are called thrust faults. "The results provide important clues to the moon's recent geologic and tectonic evolution".

"It's the boost NASA needs to move forward with design, development and exploration", the agency said.

According to the budget amendment, another $650 million of the additional funding would help NASA to develop the next-generation Space Launch System (SLS)-the most powerful rocket in the world-and Orion, the agency's new spacecraft, which will ultimately take astronauts to the Gateway.
