Addressing the recent escalation around Iran, Putin lamented the collapse of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Putin and Pompeo also discussed the crises on Iran and Venezuela.

Addressing the conservative Claremont Institute, Pompeo said that United States policymakers in recent decades had "drifted from realism" and chastised them for believing that "enfolding the likes of China and Russian Federation into a so-called rules-based global order would hasten their domestic evolution towards democracy". He observed, "Iranian nation's definite option is resistance against USA and in this confrontation, US will have to withdraw".

Pompeo meanwhile denied that the US was eyeing military action with the regime for the time being, but he did not rule it out altogether.

"Unfortunately, Americans say one thing, but in fact they never miss a chance to interfere", the expert said.

"We checked our positions on a number of important aspects relating to the complete eradication of terrorism from the Syrian territories, providing conditions to resettle refugees, resolving humanitarian issues and launching political process in the framework of forming a constitutional committee".

Pompeo added that reports of US movement of over 100,000 troops to the region would be left up to the Department of Defense.

Britain warned on Monday that conflict might break out "by accident" amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with European Union powers backing the nuclear deal with the Islamic republic. Lavrov, however, hoped that those reports were "just rumors".

SHAPIRO: Another big issue dividing the countries is Venezuela. "It's not destined that we're adversaries on every issue".

Pompeo's comments came during his first official visit to Russian Federation, a key backer of Tehran which has blamed the current crisis on Washington's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ of Barr for Investigating Mueller Probe’s Origin
He has a history of performing special investigations - in 2008 he was assigned by Attorney General Michael B. He had 18 people that didn't like Donald Trump that were Hillary Clinton fans.

The threats against the legitimate Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, from American officials and the Gauido, who all the time assumes the right to call for a foreign invasion, have nothing to do with democracy, he stated.

Pompeo's trip comes a few weeks ahead of a Group of 20 summit meeting June 28-29 in Osaka, Japan, with both Putin and President Trump expected to attend.

"If such a proposal is received, we will respond to it in a positive way", he said.

While the special counsel determined there was a lack of evidence linking the [U.S. President Donald] Trump campaign to Russia's attempts to sway the 2016 election in Trump's favor, it was not as clear-cut on obstruction as the president suggested. Putin did not address Mueller's conclusion that Russian Federation actively interfered in the election.

"I'm here today because President Trump is committed to improving this relationship", he told Lavrov at the start of their meeting.

In response, Lavrov reiterated the Kremlin's claims that Russian Federation did not interfere in the 2016 presidential election or any other campaign.

Ties between the two countries have always been poisoned by allegations - denied by Moscow - that Russian Federation tried to influence the results of the 2016 USA presidential election.

"It's clear such insinuations are absolutely fake", said Lavrov.

"We continue to fully support the nuclear deal with Iran, its full implementation", Mogherini said.
