A violent 7.5 magnitude quake struck an island chain off the north coast of Papua New Guinea late Tuesday, knocking out power and sending residents fleeing for safety.

An alert for tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meter above the tide level was issued for some coasts of Papua New Guinea.

The natural disaster took place at 11pm on May 14 local time and hit 45km from the Kokopo island.

The US Tsunami Warning System said hazardous tsunami waves were possible on coastal areas up to 1,000km from the epicentre, including Papua New Guinea and the almost Solomon Islands. "However... based on all available data... there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii".

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre put the quake at a strength of 7.7.

Papua New Guinea's rugged highlands region was hit by a 7.5-magnitude quake in February previous year that buried homes and triggered landslides, killing at least 125 people.
