Dementia affects around 50 million people globally, with almost 10 million new cases annually - a figure that is set to triple by 2050, while the cost of caring for dementia patients is expected to hit $2 trillion by 2030, WHO Assistant Director General Ren Minghui wrote in the report. Dementia is a condition characterized by difficulty with memory, thinking, and doing everyday daily activities. "Many people have the opportunity to substantially reduce their risk" by using these methods, said Tara Spires-Jones, a professor at the U.K. Dementia Research Institute.

10 million people are diagnosed with a form of dementia each year, which may triple the total number of patients by 2050, CNN reports.

People should eat more fruit, vegetables, fish and nuts and walk for about 25 minutes a day to reduce their risk of dementia, the first global guidance of its kind has concluded.

The guidelines recommend exercising regularly and following a healthy lifestyle, rather than relying on vitamin supplements or other pills.

Dementia is a syndrome - usually of a chronic or progressive nature - in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal ageing. The good news is there are ways to reduce the risk of dementia and it starts with diet and exercise.

The costs of caring for people with dementia is expected to rise to $2 trillion (roughly €1.8 trillion) per year by 2030.

We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia.

So who will win the 2019 PGA Championship , and which long shots stun the golfing world? "This could be a hell of a championship". I think I've done a lot of the legwork and the hard work already, trying to find my game over the past year and a half.

Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's disease or stroke.

The guidelines are designed for use by healthcare providers and also for governments, policy-makers and planning authorities.

"Dementia is a rapidly growing public health problem affecting around 50 million people globally".

And they hint that an active social life could also be beneficial, pointing to studies showing that social disengagement can place older individuals at increased risk of cognitive impairment.

The largest increase in cases over the next three decades will be seen in low- and middle-income countries where overall population growth is the highest, World Health Organization said, warning that many healthcare systems will face significant challenges.

Although the guideline is intended as a knowledge base for experts in the fight against cognitive decline and dementia, the World Health Organization said it would also be of great use to policy-makers in designing programmes that encourage healthy lifestyles.
