SpaceX to launch first satellites for Musk's Starlink internet service

Elon Musk Shows Off 60 Starlink Satellites Stacked Inside A Falcon Rocket SpaceX To Launch 60 Starlink Satellites For Speedy Space Internet Service

The plan to launch 60 "Starlink" satellites aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida was canceled last night "due to excess upper level winds", according to SpaceX.

The Starlink project is an ambitious project by the billionaire entrepreneur which plans provide the internet from space.

In its final form, Starlink will consist of almost 12,000 satellites - six times the number of all operational spacecraft now in orbit - in several orbital "shells".

Others companies working on large new constellations include OneWeb, which launched its first six satellites in February, and Telesat.

Another task of Elon Musk is to launch satellite; not just one or two but 60 altogether into the space tomorrow.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has made a business out of launching satellites for commercial customers, NASA and the USA military. He added, though, that SpaceX would be happy to launch any of his competitors' satellites.

They knew what they were doing and they implemented their plan perfectly", Walker said at the news conference. Two people, believed to be window washers, were on the lift when it became loose and started swinging .

Fortunately, Elon Musk's company will get another shot at launching the first 60 of more than 12,000 planned Starlink satellites when a back-up window opens up tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET, weather permitting.

According to Elon Musk, the Starlink satellites that had been packed into the rocket, were not prototypes as was the case with earlier tests but rather production satellites. As indicated by an examination by BroadbandNow, LEO satellite networks could possibly spare American family units more than $30 billion in internet fees per year, as well as deliver more reliable service to rural areas that don't have many options when it comes to high-speed wired internet.

But Sachdeva has raised questions about whether SpaceX is wise to plan a constellation of satellites that could eventually total 12,000. Effectively a testbed for SpaceX to gain experience building an operating rockets made out of steel, Starhopper is unlikely to ever move beyond low-speed, low-altitude hover tests.

"Each company has to launch a certain number of satellites to provide commercial services", said Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association in Washington. Each satellite would link to four others via laser beams, creating a robust mesh network around Earth. The Starlink will be using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

Musk said Starlink terminals, leveraging work by SpaceX's "chip team", can switch between satellites in under a thousandth of a second, and will support a system where the overall latency is under 20 milliseconds.
