Kaser was at the farm by himself in Pender, located near the Iowa border, about three and a half weeks ago, when he had to make the split decision to cut off his leg.

He said that while he was amputating his leg, he could feel the nerve endings in his leg "just ping every time I'd start sawing around that pipe", and that once his leg was free, he "got the heck out of there". "I was sure that I'm going to faint", he told NBC News, "but something told me that I have to hold on".

Mr Kaser said he had removed a safety covering at the end of the auger in the winter to make the equipment fit under a grain bin, and told ABC News he was "kind of disappointed in myself that I didn't think of fixing that thing". "If it sucks me in all the way, it's over with.' But then, all at once, I thought of my pocket knife". Growing desperate by the seconds, the farmer said he was left with one option.

"I look at other people that were [at the hospital] and I still have most of my leg and hope to walk again soon", he said. "They're going to grab me and pull me in further, '" he said. He managed to retrieve his pocket knife, which he described as having a 3-to-4-inch blade.

He added: "When it first happened, I remember thinking, 'This ain't good".

He amputated the bottom part of his own leg, crawled 150 feet to the nearest phone, and remained conscious all the way to the hospital.

"Everybody says "You seem so upbeat about it". He told doctors his goal is to get back to farming.

"Everyone asks me why I am so calm about the situation and the truth is, when I was in Madonna (the rehabilitation hospital), I saw so many people who will probably never be able to walk again and I know I will be able to walk mildly normal, I'm fortunate", he said. "I paid the price of being in a hurry and not paying attention, basically".
