Judge declines to block subpoenas seeking financial information about Trump, family

During an impromptu news conference in the Rose Garden Wednesday, Trump said he won't talk to Democrats again until the investigations are over. Trump's Twitter fingers took over, and the USA president composed a four-tweet statement proclaiming Democrats were "tearing the United States apart" and that it would be impossible for them to "investigate and legislate simultaneously".

The president had met with Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) to discuss a bipartisan, $2 trillion infrastructure plan moments beforehand, but cut the meeting short. "There were those who said that we should not work with the President, but we believe that we must be For The People and create good-paying jobs for American workers".

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump called Mehta's decision "crazy" and "totally the wrong decision by obviously an Obama-appointed judge", referring to Trump's Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama. Nancy Pelosi, Democrat leader in the House of Representatives, had angered the president before hand by saying he was "engaged in a cover-up".

The judge then noted that both sides had agreed that the subpoenas would not require a response for another week, giving Trump, his family and his companies time to appeal.

Those Democrats say the move would not necessarily be aimed at removing the president, but instead to bolster their position in court as Trump has broadly stonewalled their investigations.

In a lawsuit filed on April 29, lawyers for the Trumps argued that the subpoenas were too broad, and that Democrats are hoping they will "stumble upon something" that could be used for political attacks on the president.

After the meeting Pelosi sent a letter to colleagues saying Trump had "had a temper tantrum for us all to see" over the investigations. Schumer and Pelosi were waiting for him.

Still, Pelosi is facing some rumbling inside her Democratic caucus. His intransigence has animated more and more Democrats to talk impeachment, even if just to begin proceedings in order to get further access to documents and testimony.

Michael Stern, who served as senior House counsel from 1996 to 2004, said in an interview on Tuesday that Trump and the other plaintiffs faced an uphill battle.

What we're left with an Impeachment in All But Name, as the president and his Democratic adversaries keep raising the stakes.

Federal Judge Edgardo Ramos refused to issue a preliminary injunction that Trump's attorneys had requested to stop Deutsche Bank from complying with a subpoena from Congress.

The president had already lost a similar case in a federal court in Washington this week, when a judge found that Trump could not block a Congress subpoena for information from a financial services firm that had done some accounting for him.
