US Billionaire Pays Off Students' Debts

Robert F. Smith Billionaire Commencement Speaker Surprises Grads With Huge Student Loan Announcement

Billionaire investor Robert F. Smith received an honorary degree from Morehouse College during graduation ceremonies Sunday-and he told the rest of the Class of 2019 that they wouldn't have to worry about repaying student debt.

That's because Smith announced he was paying off all the student loans of the entire graduating class of 2019. There are 400 graduates in the class, and Morehouse costs about $26,000 per year, his spokesperson said.

That man is Robert F. Smith, founder of Vista Equity and who, as per Forbes, is worth some $5 billion, making him by their estimations the richest black person in America. "I want my class to look at these alumni, these attractive Morehouse brothers, and let's make sure every class has the same opportunity going forward".

As I read students' stories of what the financial freedom meant to them - from job offers with salaries that would go toward becoming homeowners to planting the seed of entrepreneurship - I thought about more of Smith's words.

"He wants us to start to gift it, and I think that's an unbelievable thing, because it really shows black men taking care of other black men", Medlock said.

"It'll sink in as the years go on".

"Only after I put in the time to develop this expertise and the discipline of the scientific process that I was able to apply my knowledge beyond the lab", he said.

"I will never forget that my path was paved by parents, grandparents and generations of African-Americans whose names I will never know", said Smith, who founded Vista Equity, which invests in software, data and technology companies. Forbes lists him as having a net worth of almost $5 billion making him the nation's wealthiest African-American.

"In some ways, it was a liberation gift for these young men that just opened up their choices".

Morehouse officials said Smith's gesture is the biggest single gift in the school's history. It comes in addition to a $1.5 million donation Smith gave Morehouse earlier this year for scholarships and a new park.

Smith is the first African American to sign the Giving Pledge, a campaign started by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett that encourages the world's wealthiest individuals to commit to dedicating the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.

University officials, who were unaware of Smith's gift prior to selecting him, said he was chosen as this year's commencement speaker because of "his inspirational journey as a visionary entrepreneur and scholar". His wife, model Hope Dworaczyk Smith, will focus on helping children, he wrote.
