ME governor signs law expanding medical professionals allowed to perform abortions

Maine’s new bill may be especially beneficial for women living in rural communities Maine governor signs abortion bill allowing non-doctors to perform procedure

"Expanding who is allowed to perform an abortion does not expand the safety of the procedure", Republican Sen.

The bill was introduced by Gov. Janet Mills and signed on Monday, allowing nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse-midwives to provide abortion medication as well as perform in-clinic abortions.

Maine's Democratic governor signed a bill into law this week that allows medical professionals other than doctors to perform abortions. With Mills in the governor's office and Democrats controlling the Legislature, Maine is moving to expand access to abortion at a time when states such as Georgia, Alabama and Missouri are moving to severely restrict access.

Supporters argued that existing law restricts access to abortion - particularly in rural areas of ME - by not allowing properly trained physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses to perform the medical procedure or prescribe drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The CCL's executive director, Carroll Conley, said he is concerned whether non-physician practitioners can receive sufficient training to perform abortions by September, among other concerns. Opponents, meanwhile, predicted the measure would increase risks for women and lead to more abortions in Maine.

But the national skipper missed Tuesday night's qualifier against Belgium - a tie Scotland lost 3-0 - due to a hamstring injury. In contrast to his club form, the former Toffee has scored seven goals in his last six appearances for Belgium .

But critics say that just because more people are legally allowed to perform the abortion does not mean that there are more safeguards in place for women in the case of extra complications such as hemorrhaging, which only trained doctors can handle.

Maine, Missouri and Vermont all handed measures or secured court victories that will per chance well support amplify abortion access of their states, at the least for the time being. Almost two dozen states, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have expanded their list of abortion-medication providers following court or agency rulings.

"States across the country, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have already eliminated this outdated restriction on abortion care", said Sara Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

The law also came in the wake of lawsuits from advocacy groups and abortion clinic suing ME over its abortion provider restrictions and ban on state Medicaid funds for abortions.
