The gunman who shot former Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz was hired to do so, according to Dominican Republic Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista.

Clifton Police Detective Lt. Robert Bracken told the website he suspects the man who committed the robberies is the same one who confessed to shooting Ortiz, but said he needed to see Ferreyra's biographical information to be certain. He underwent a second surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and surgeons have reportedly removed Ortiz's gall bladder and parts of his intestines and colon.

The 43-year-old Ortiz frequently travels to Santo Domingo, where his father and a sister live. "Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps", the statement read.

"My family and I again want to thank everyone for their endless love and well wishes, and still ask for privacy while David continues to heal". Authorities gave the name of the alleged shooter as Rolfy Ferrery, aka Sandy.

Four more suspects are still at large.

Police said the shooter was offered the equivalent of about $8,000 to shoot Ortiz.

"No person involved in this act will go unpunished", the Dominican Republic's attorney general, Jean Alain Rodriguez, said at the news conference.

RJ Barrett Only Wants to Workout for the New York Knicks
It remains to be seen if Barrett will be available at No. 3, but if so, it sure seems like the Knicks will draft him. The 2019 National Basketball Association draft is June 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The Dominican Republic is one of the world's most unsafe countries.

He helped Boston capture their first World Series title in 86 years in 2004, when he was the MVP of the American League Championship Series.

Two others were wounded in the attack, including television host Jhoel Lopez, who was seated with Ortiz and who was struck in the leg by the same bullet that hit Ortiz.

Mirabal Acosta was captured Tuesday night in the town of Mao in the northern Dominican Republic.

It's unclear what charges the suspects are expected to face, but investigators are treating the case as an attempted murder. His lawyer and his mother insist he's innocent of any wrongdoing, asserting he's a motorcycle taxi driver who unwittingly picked up the gunman as a fare and drove him to the crime scene without knowing his intentions.

Five other suspects are being sought, Bautista said.

The Dominican newspaper Diario Libre reported on Wednesday that Mirabal Acosta has been connected with a gang of drug dealers and assassins in Santo Domingo Este.
