And, in a separate incident, a member of the Icelandic media was seen to hold a toilet brush in lieu of a microphone in a media scrum with veteran player Emre Belozoglu.

Belozoglu told local media, "We were searched a couple of times which was unnecessary, and we were told to wait until now".

In a phone call, top diplomats from Turkey and Iceland on Tuesday discussed the mistreatment of Turkish football players who arrived in the country by plane last weekend, according to diplomatic sources.

Besiktas forward Burak Yilmaz is reported to have said that the team was subjected to intricate searches of their bags by customs agents, hampering their arrival at the team hotel and disrupting their training schedule. The team claimed that their bags were searched and that they had to wait three hours to merely leave the airport.

He said that this is due to the attitude of the staff of Reykjavík Airport to the Turkish national team players who arrived in Iceland for the Euro 2020 qualifying match. They took everyone's bags and even everyone's cosmetics. "We flew for 6.5 hours and we've waited for three hours".

In a Twitter post, Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu termed the treatment at the Iceland airport "unacceptable".

Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said action will be taken.

"Our national team will give the best response on the field", he added.

Turkey's embassy in Oslo sent a diplomatic note to Iceland's government protesting at the "disrespect" shown to the team.

Iceland's ministry of foreign affairs confirmed that a formal protest has been lodged. Omar Smarason, head of media and marketing at the Football Association of Iceland, said all passengers from "non-certified" airports received similar checks.

The team, which is scheduled to face Iceland as part of Euro 2020 qualifiers, was put through a special passport check and their luggage was also subjected to an additional inspection.

The man with the brush was shown on Turkish TV filming himself with a mobile device as he approached the players with his mock microphone.

The hashtage #TurksAreComingForIceland started trending on Twitter on Sunday night as official statements from Turkish officials began piling up.
