A request by the United States to extradite Julian Assange has been signed by the Home Secretary Sajid Javid ahead of a court hearing on Friday.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the U.K.'s top diplomat said he would not stand in the way of Assange's extradition, telling CBS' "Face the Nation" recently that he had no sympathy for the 47-year-old.

The US Justice Department confirmed on Tuesday that it had submitted a formal extradition request.

Assange was arrested by British police in April after Ecuadorian officials withdrew his asylum status.

"There's an extradition request from the U.S. that is before the courts tomorrow", he told Radio 4's Today programme.

Julian Assange is now serving 50 weeks imprisonment sentence in UK's Belmarsh prison.

The US accuses Assange of assisting Chelsea Manning, a former US intelligence analyst, in breaking a password that helped her sift through military documents.

Mr. Assange, who faces an 18-count indictment by the U.S. Justice Department, was too ill to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court at a scheduled hearing last month and his next hearing is expected to take place at the high-security Belmarsh jail in London, where he is being held.

The allegations he faces in the U.S. include computer misuse and the unauthorized disclosure of national defence information. He had sought refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012 when Sweden was trying to question him about sexual misconduct allegations.

Mr Assange was initially charged with a single computer crime violation on allegations that he worked with Ms Manning to crack a government password. Some legal experts have said the additional Espionage Act charges might slow or complicate the extradition process to the extent the United Kingdom views them as political offenses and therefore exempt from extradition.

The "first real confrontation of arguments" in court will not be for several weeks or months, according to WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Hrafnsson.
