Apple's 2020 iPhone might reduce TrueDepth notch with smaller camera

Kuo: 2020 iPhones will have a smaller notch Apple to ditch the notch and develop in-display Touch ID sensor

Another investor note - this time by Credit Suisse - also reveals that Apple's screen suppliers are actively working on displays without a notch. According to a report on CNBC, JP Morgan analysts believe that apart from the three premium iPhones, the company will introduce cheaper models that everyone can afford as well. In its place, the device will feature an under-screen front camera and full-screen acoustic fingerprint authentication that could work anywhere on the iPhone's display. The news outlet also claims that Apple will use its own under-screen fingerprinting technology rather than using a third-party component. From a security standpoint, Face ID is 20 times more secure than Touch ID as Face ID gives a false positive one out of every million tries and Touch ID returns a false positive in just one out of every 50,000 tries.

2020: new iPhone lineups with slimmer notches and one notch-less iPhone with full-screen fingerprint authentication. Rumor has it Apple will have three OLED models in 2020, with 6.7-inch, 5.4-inch, and 6.1-inch displays. Removing the TrueDepth sensor, which is required by Face ID, will automatically result in a smaller notch.

Instead, the analysts predict the first notch-free iPhone will come in 2020, with the iPhone 12 series - but not all of them.

The iPhone X launched with the infamous notch in late 2017 starting a design trend that many other phone makers then copied, but right now in 2019, we are already seeing true edge-to-edge designs with no notch and practically no bezel that look really futuristic and spur questions about the dated look of a phone with a notch. "It is also early, so these plans could change". An iPhone could very well have both Touch ID and Face ID - a combination that would offer a suite of benefits to users. OnePlus and a few other companies have added cameras that pop out of the top of their phones, eliminating the need for a cutout above the screen.

While we always take Kuo's thoughts with a pinch of salt, there is some logic here. It is a cornerstone of the Apple experience, but the whole Face ID module is rather large, so hiding it is an extremely hard task. Thus, ditching Face ID in favor of Touch ID seems highly unlikely for now.
