VW will produce the last Beetle model this week at its plant in Puebla, Mexico marking the end of the road for a vehicle that has been in production since 1938.

In a statement, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh said "It's impossible to imagine where Volkswagen would be without the Beetle". "From its first import in 1949 to today's retro-inspired design, it has showcased our company's ability to fit round pegs into square holes of the automotive industry". It's a coupe with those lovely retro wheels and a paint colour known as "Denim Blue". But don't expect to see this particular Beetle hitting the streets however as Volkswagen plans to keep it for themselves. VW ended production of the Beetle in Germany in 1978. Powered by an air-cooled engine instead of a water-cooled one, its simple mechanics meant it was a cheap and durable vehicle that can be used by all during the postwar era. The final auto produced by Volkswagen de Mexico's Puebla plant-a Denim Blue coupe-will live on display at Volkswagen's local museum in Puebla as a lasting tribute to the automobile's rich and storied heritage. When it was first launched as a project of Germany's Third Reich, it became a symbol of post-war Germany and the rise of the middle class.

Introduced to America as the Type 1, Volkswagen sold almost five million Beetles in the United States, and a worldwide total of 21.5 million cars.

Since then, with the introduction of the second and third generations, the Beetle was the one vehicle in the VW line up that retained a genuine sense of individuality and identity.

The New Beetle went on sale in 1998, and sold more than 1.2 million units between '98 and 2010.

The Puebla plant, which has been making Beetles since 1967, will replace the Beetle on the production line with a compact SUV that will slot beneath the VW Tiguan and be sold in the North American market.

For the first time in eight-decades, the Volkswagen Beetle is out of production.
