Manchester United have reportedly been permitted to hold talks with midfielder Mario Lemina regarding a potential move away from Southampton this summer.

The Red Devils were desperately poor past year where they finished sixth in the Premier League amid a multitude of problems behind closed doors.

The Gabon global has struggled to make it at St. Mary's as injuries have hampered him.

It looks like the 25-year-old is now set for a move as Lemina was left out of the Southampton squad by boss Ralph Hasenhuttl for their pre-season tour and was left behind when the rest of the squad flew-out to Austria on Monday. Ander Herrera has left for Paris St-Germain whereas both Nemanja Matic and Fred had an underwhelming campaign deep down the midfield.

The 25-year-old has made a decision to leave Southampton, though, and gave a full rundown of his situation to France Football.

Lemina has struggled to nail down a spot in the Southampton starting XI despite joining for a then-club record fee of £18m two years ago from Juventus.

It was only this weekend when the Gabonese worldwide admitted he was open to leaving the Saints.

"I did not accompany the team in training in agreement with the coach".

"I want to show everyone what I can do".

"I aspire to play in the biggest clubs, now we will see what is proposed".

In spite of those numbers, Lemina said: 'I am truly looking to find consistency again, to become an important player in a team again with big objectives. But it is true that I do not rule out the possibility of seeing something else.

Lemina missed four months of last season with an abdominal injury, but he insisted the problem is behind him and he is now fully fit. "I stand by my plan, I chose to tell the leaders that I wanted to leave, there is no turning back", Lemina explained. "They are giving me the opportunity to be able to go elsewhere".
