England swept into their first World Cup final for 27 years as the hosts crushed Australia by eight wickets on Thursday to book a clash with New Zealand in Sunday´s title match.

In contrast, Australia have won four of the last five tournaments but there was no sign at all of those sharply contrasting pedigrees once play began at Edgbaston.

England opener Jason Roy smashed three sixes in a row in his 85 off 65 balls, helping England reach its target in just 32.1 overs.

Eoin Morgan lauded England's remarkable ODI revival after his side reached the Cricket World Cup final four years after a humiliating group-stage exit.

The five-time world champions were unable to cope with the searing spell of swing and seam bowling Archer and Woakes were producing, pitching the flawless lines and lengths in a hostile opening half-an-hour of play.

England are unlikely to make any changes to the winning combination. One consistently solid feature of the England squad is Joe Root .

Even so, Roy is still likely to be available for Sunday's final against New Zealand at Lord's should England beat Australia. "They absorbed a bit of pressure, saw that swing was going to be a little bit of a threat and the way they waited until the bowlers came into their areas to hurt them was very smart", said Joe Root, who saw England through to victory with a brisk unbeaten 49 from 46 balls.

Roy's sublime strokeplay for his 85 and Woakes's 3-20 were the two outstanding individual contributions but Adil Rashid's leg spin delivered three wickets, including the stubborn Carey to break a 103-run partnership with Steve Smith.

This was a complete display by England, who were magnificent with the ball, sharp in the field and dominant with the bat. He added: "We were tipped as favourites so it was important to get to the semi-final in the first place and then to win this in this fashion against this Australia side on the best ground in the world is awesome". It will be a matter of trying to produce everything that we can performance-wise, but enjoy the day'.

"So there was quite a drastic change in the way we played and the way we looked at playing our 50-over cricket". The Aussies are facing the wrath of the English bowlers recreating a similar picture of Indian batsmen against New Zealand yesterday. Asked how it felt to help take England to within touching distance of their first World Cup crown, Woakes said his team had tried their best to block out the potentially historic nature of their campaign.
