A Telstra spokesperson said: "We continue to investigate the issue affecting data services, including EFTPOS and access to ATMS, for a number of enterprise customers nationally".

The telco said it's now investigating the issue, which is impacting "a number of enterprise customers nationally".

"We're sorry for any issues caused and will provide an update when we know more", he added.

A Westpac spokesperson told Business Insider Australia that the bank is also facing outages of its ATM and Eftpos services, saying the issue is known to be affecting the Sydney metropolitan area, particularly the central business district. We are continuing to monitor all services as this happens.

Shops using Comm Bank EFTPOS claim their machines are also down and are coming up with error messages, leaving them unable to process purchases. "We apologise for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience", a Woolworths spokesperson said.

Australian banks and retailers were getting back online on Thursday after a nationwide telecoms outage knocked out electronic payment systems and cash machines for several hours.

"We are impacted by an issue with one of our telecommunication providers that are affecting some of our services".

Caltex service stations, Coles and Woolworths stores, Big W and liquor retailers BWS and Dan Murphy's weren't spared from the outage.

Commonwealth has released a statement on social media, informers customers that they are aware that their machines are flopping and they're doing their best to resolve the issue. The cause of the problem is under urgent investigation.
