"If you consume from time to time a sugary drink it won't be a problem, but if you drink at least one glass a day it can raise the risk of several diseases - here, maybe cancer, but also with a high level of evidence, cardiometabolic diseases".

Drinking soda doesn't just threaten to make us fat, it could be linked to a higher risk of cancer, judging from a new study. The average age at cancer diagnosis was 58.5.

The results of her study, which was published in the BMJ today, suggest that regardless of other factors like how old a person is, what their family history may be, how active they are, how much schooling they've had, or even whether they're on birth control, people who drink more sugar tend to get more cancer.

The study stops short concluding that sugar is the cause of cancer, though the authors suggested limiting your daily intake of sugary drinks isn't a bad idea.

Researchers in France monitored participants' daily consumption of sugar and artificially sweetened beverages, as well as 100% fruit juices.

For every extra 100ml per day consumed on top of this, a person's cancer risk increased by 18% for all cancers and, among women, by 22% for breast cancer. The team surveyed more than 100,000 adults, with an average of age of 42, 79% of whom were women.

Other explanations for the link between sugary drinks and cancer could be the high glycaemic load of sugary drinks, they said.

Touvier said her team observed that sugar seemed to be the main driver of the link.

Both juice and other sweet beverages were associated with increased overall cancer risk, but links to specific types of cancers were either not found or too few cases were present in the study for determinations to be made.

Experts now believe people in the United Kingdom have a roughly 50/50 chance of developing some form of cancer during their life.

The authors said the study is observational, meaning the group can not state sugars cause cancer.

Her team's findings support "existing nutritional recommendations to limit sugary drinks consumption, including 100% fruit juices, as well as policy actions such as taxation and marketing restrictions targeting sugary drinks", Touvier said.

So, it did show that the people who drank the most (about 185ml a day) had more cancer cases than those who drank the least (less than 30ml a day).

"More research is needed to understand if there is a direct link between sugary drinks and cancer", she added.

"While this study doesn't offer a definitive causative answer about sugar and cancer, it does add to the overall picture of the importance of the current drive to reduce our sugar intake", said Amelia Lake, reader in public health nutrition at Teesside University.

The British Soft Drinks Association said the study "does not provide evidence of cause, as the authors readily admit".

"It's important for people to know that all beverages - either with sugar or without are safe to consume as part of a balanced diet", Danielle Smotkin, a spokeswoman for the American Beverage Association said in a statement.
