Federer excited for 'brutal' Djokovic final

Eight-time All England Club champion Federer's reward for a thrilling four-set victory over Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals is a meeting with another fellow great in Djokovic, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut.

"He played really well".

While Djokovic did see a brief dip in form during 2017, his resurgence since then has been truly remarkable and he is now the reigning Wimbledon champion.

"We all know how good he is anywhere", Djokovic said about Federer, "but especially here".

Whoever comes out on top Sunday, the 2019 Wimbledon title will be the 11th Slam in a row won by Federer, Djokovic or Nadal - and the 54th in the past 65.

Once his volley victor found the net tape and trickled over to cap the third set - turnabout was fair play, in this instance, after the way the previous set ended - the outcome seemed inevitable.

I thought probably the biggest points in the match went my way. "He had that match point, he served for the fourth set, but Roger wouldn't be Roger if he wouldn't always find another shot". But Wimbledon is Federer's dominion: He's won 101 matches at the place - more than any other man at any other Slam, even Nadal at Roland Garros - and all of those trophies. He'll play either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal in what will be his 25th grand slam final.

"I had to dig deep", said Djokovic, 32, who claimed he got tight in the middle games of the second set.

The Serbian battled past Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 as he chases back-to-back Wimbledon successes for the second time in his career.

"There's no point to start partying tonight or get too emotional, too happy about it, even though I am extremely happy", he said.

And, perhaps shockingly, this is the narrowest the gap has been between the two since July 2004, when Federer had two and Nadal had none.

"I created another opportunity to be in another final of a Grand Slam". He may one day become the most prolific slam victor.

Federer won the first set 7-6 (3).

"Last year I had chances here (he lost in five sets to Djokovic in the semi-final), I had another one, and I was not able to convert to win it one more time here".

The Spaniard's form had led American great John McEnroe to declare: "You play against a guy like Nadal, he wants to tear your heart out".

"It will be hard to see it again but we are not done".

As entertaining as that match was - including a 45-stroke point won by Djokovic - it was merely a tasty appetizer ahead of the day's delectable main course.

This was seen by many as the aperitif for the second semi-final between Federer and Nadal.

However, he will have his work cut out on Sunday if he is to secure a 21st major title as he trails 15-time Slam victor Djokovic 25-22 in career meetings. Federer amassed 10 break points, and though he succeeded on just two, that was enough, with the last, vital conversion making it 2-1 in the fourth set. Moments later, he was ending a 45-stroke baseline exchange - the longest on record at Wimbledon, where such stats date to 2006 - with a backhand victor to save a break point. Instead, the Serb cruised past the Belgian in straight sets and also brushed aside surprise semi-finalist Bautista Agut.
