In a memo addressed to the space agency's employees, Bridenstine explained that the leadership change is a bid to meet the challenges of the upcoming 2024 moon mission.

Effective immediately, Ken Bowersox - a five-flight shuttle veteran, space station astronaut and Gerstenmaier's deputy - will take over on an acting basis while Gerstenmaier serves as "special adviser" to NASA Deputy Administrator Jim Morhard, according to Bridenstine's letter sent to agency employees.
"We, as a nation, are thankful for his service in advancing America's priorities and expanding the limits of science, technology, and exploration", Bridenstine wrote in the memo. "We are building for the long term, and this time are going to the Moon to stay".
The Washington Post writes the developments come as Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials reportedly met with Bridenstine recently to voice their frustration over the agency's slow progress on tackling challenging new mission deadlines.
