Mr Johnson's lack of explicit support for Sir Kim during the ITV debate on Tuesday was widely seen to have been the final straw for the envoy following the leak of his diplomatic cables criticising Donald Trump's White House.
The head of Britain's diplomatic service, Simon McDonald, said this week he was "bracing" himself for further leaks.
"Given the widely reported consequences of that leak, I am satisfied that there has been damage caused to United Kingdom global relations, and there would be a clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice", Met Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said in a statement.
Jeremy Hunt has spoken out about the leaker who cost Britain's USA ambassador his job and said they "must be held fully to account".
Mr Basu also warned owners, editors and publishers of social and mainstream media not to publish leaked government documents, and to return any in their possession to their rightful owners.
"I fear there may be more", he said.
"Going after the leaker is fair game, going after the media is not", he said.
The London Metropolitan Police said its counter-terrorism command, which takes national responsibility for investigating allegations of criminal breaches of the Official Secrets Act, was leading the investigation.
The British government had opened its own inquiry into the leaks this week and noted it had involved the police to ascertain whether any documents protected by the Official Secrets Act had been shared.

Darroch announced on Wednesday he was resigning, saying his position had become "impossible" following the leak of his dispatches in which he described Donald Trump's White House as "inept" and "dysfunctional".
In furious verbal attacks on Darroch, Trump has described the ambassador as "wacky", "a very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool".
He asked the person behind the leaks to turn themselves in and avoid wasting detectives' time, saying: "You can stop this now".
"There were lots of factors in his resignation and I would suggest President Trump's response, and the President had actually banned him, made it very hard for him to do his job. Turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences", Basu's statement read.
Sir Kim's resignation prompted widespread support for him - as well as criticism of Tory leadership frontrunner Mr Johnson.
Trump earlier had publicly blasted the former British diplomat after reports unveiled details of Darroch's telegrams assessing the USA government and Trump's administration.
