Manhattan power outage affects tens of thousands, subway system

The New York Fire Department said it was tackling a fire in an electrical transformer in Manhattan, the most densely populated of the city's five boroughs.

A Reuters witness in the area reported hearing an explosion at about 7 p.m. (2300 GMT), and a New York City Fire Department spokesman said firefighters were on the scene of a transformer fire.

Con Edison said it was working on restoring power to 42,000 customers on Manhattan's West Side, calling the outages "extensive".

"Subway service remains significantly disrupted across the system, although there is limited service on the 1/2/3 and 4/5/6 lines.", the Metropolitan Transportation Authority tweeted.

The failure came on the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 power failure that plunged the NY skyline into darkness, triggering widespread looting and arson.

NBC News correspondent and anchor, Kate Snow, tweeted a picture of a dark hallway at the network's headquarters, and said staffers were forced to use backup generators to broadcast Saturday's edition of Nightly News. There were very few lights in building windows and brightly lit food carts were some of the few sources of light beyond vehicle headlights.
