Steven Clarke | 14 July, 2019, 07:08

Officials with Con Edison later tweeted that they were working to restore electricity to customers and businesses primarily on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

It has been reported that the NY Fire Department responded to a transformer fire at West 64th St and West End Ave.

Council Speaker Corey Johnson confirmed various train disruptions: "MTA is reporting that the outage is directly disrupting service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx".

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said preliminary information indicated that a substation fire triggered three other substations "to either go offline or to have a difficulty".

The FDNY reports that they are receiving calls from residents without power in the West 40s all the way north to 72nd Street.

The blackout stopped subway service, halted Broadway shows, disabled traffic lights and may have trapped people in elevators.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is Iowa to campaign for president, initially delayed returning to the city, but later his spokesperson said he was on his way back. There was also "smoke in multiple buildings" on the West Side, the department said, and it was responding to "numerous" reports of people stuck in elevators.

The mayor later tweeted that a manhole fire was believed to be the cause of the outages.

Lopez took to Twitter to say that she was "heartbroken" about the rest of her show being cancelled and that it would be rescheduled.

Two city officials briefed on the situation told ABC News that the outages at first appeared to be under control.

The city's subway system said it was working with utility Con Edison to determine the root cause of the outage, which it said was affecting Midtown and the Upper West Side.

Without traffic lights, some New Yorkers stepped in to help, as captured on social media.

The company is advising people in the affected areas switch off or unplug electrical appliances to avoid potential damage to the appliances when power is restored.

At Madison Square Garden, Jennifer Lopez's Saturday night show was evacuated due to safety concerns following the blackout, The Hollywood Reporter says.
