The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames swapped contract problems on Friday, as winger Milan Lucic waived his no-movement clause to allow a trade for winger James Neal. "Edmonton will also retain a portion (12.5%) of Lucic's remaining contract".

Assuming the Oilers are confident enough that last season was nothing more than a blip and the veteran can regain his form, Neal does, however, become a prime candidate to play alongside in Edmonton's top six, quite possibly alongside one or both of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The former 40-goal scorer tallied just seven goals and 19 points in 63 games for the Flames last season.

Lucic was signed by Peter Chiarelli back on July 1, 2016, to a seven-year deal worth $6 million annually. In the following two seasons, though, Lucic scored just 16 goals.

The 31-year-old was originally selected by the Boston Bruins 50th overall in the second round of the 2006 NHL Draft.

The Oilers included a conditional third-round pick in 2020.

Lucic signed in Edmonton ahead of the 2016-17 season and scored 23 goals and 50 points in his first season with the club, helping lead them to the second round of the National Hockey League playoffs.

On Nov. 8, 2013, the Oilers acquired goalie Laurent Broissoit and forward Roman Horak for goalie Olivier Roy and defenseman Ladislav Smid.
