Hubble Showcases New Portrait of Jupiter

Hubble Showcases New Portrait of Jupiter Jupiter's annual portrait is a beaut

The two white oval features are anticyclones, similar to small versions of the Great Red Spot.

NASA has released a brand new image from The Hubble Space Telescope showcasing what is now the best image we now have of the giant planet Jupiter. The colors of the clouds, which move in opposite directions, are caused by the varying pressure in Jupiter's atmosphere. It features the planet's trademark Great Red Spot and a more intense colour palette in the clouds swirling in the planet's turbulent atmosphere than seen in previous years. Stripes of the planet are due to the difference in height and thickness of the ammonia cloud.

The storm itself is structured like a wedding cake, with an upper layer extending more than 3 miles higher than surrounding clouds, according to NASA.

The worm-shaped feature located south of the Great Red Spot is a cyclone, a vortex spinning in the opposite direction to that in which the Great Red Spot spins. Lighter bands have risen higher from the surface while the thicker bands represent more dense clouds. The red band above and to the right (northeast) of the Great Red Spot contains clouds moving westward and around the north of the giant tempest.

Just as families record the changing faces of their kids as they grow older, the Hubble Space Telescope each year captures the changing faces of the solar system's four colorful gas-giant planets.

Misuse of land and agriculture is driving climate change
Leading Australian farmers are already heading down these paths , and we have a lot to teach the world about how to do this. The latest United Nations climate report recommends sustainable food habits to preserve the land and limit climate change .

"The white clouds to the left (southwest) of the storm are moving eastward to the south of the spot".

"The goal is to fill in gaps in the archive of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune images because, some years, there were no successful proposals to use Hubble to observe individual planets", Wong said. Researchers have observed cyclones with a wide variety of different appearances across the planet. All strips divided by the winds which can reach up to 644 kilometers per hour.

"Another interesting detail is the color of the wide band at the equator".

Regardless, the Jupiter storm is still large enough to swallow our planet whole. It was taken as part of the Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy Program, which aims to showcase yearly photos of other planets to monitor changes in their atmospheric features.
