British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman crossed the wires in the last minutes, repeating that the PM is very clear that he wants to get a Brexit deal.

It comes after it emerged on Thursday that the Tory government is preparing to call an election "days after" the Brexit deadline date of October 31 - if a majority of UK MPs vote no-confidence in his administration, according to the Financial Times.

Some reports have said Johnson could refuse to resign even if he lost a no-confidence vote, in order to delay an election beyond Brexit day and ensure the country leaves the EU.

One petitioner, Edinburgh South Labour MP Ian Murray, said: "When Boris Johnson unveiled his vacuous slogan "taking back control", voters weren't told that this could mean shutting down parliament".

Whether a parliamentary vote of no-confidence in the government would prove successful is another matter, however, but with a tiny majority of just one, it's entirely possible Johnson may be forced into calling an election, almost two years earlier than now scheduled.

MPs are said to believe the Fixed-Term Parliament Act, which dictates what happens if a prime minister loses the confidence of MPs, gives them an opportunity to mobilise against no deal.

The memo says: "The campaign will seek to make inaction against a no-deal Brexit electorally toxic in key Labour and Conservative seats ahead of attempts by parliamentarians to block no deal this autumn".

The spokesman added: "He has held a number of conversations with European Union leaders, so has the prime minister's sherpa David Frost".

"There are daily meetings taking place to ensure that we are ready and there are bi-weekly strategy meetings taking place in relation to the negotiations if the European Union is willing to sit down and negotiate".

"[The prime minister] wants to achieve a deal but if we can not achieve a deal then it needs to be as orderly a Brexit as possible - that is why the work of government at the moment is focused hugely on that effort".

Just 29 per cent said he should step down so another government could be formed to stop a no-deal Brexit.

"I think that we can avoid chaos by making preparations", he said.
