Bodies Found in Manitoba Confirmed to be Wanted Murder Suspects

Autopsy results expected today in case of northern B.C. teen murder suspects Bodies found in Canada are confirmed as wanted killers; cause of death appears to be suicide by gunfire

The autopsy confirmed the bodies were McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, 18, who led Canadian authorities on a three-week manhunt for more than 3000km from British Columbia to Gillam, Manitoba.

Sgt. Paul Manaigre said RCMP have formalities to complete before they can officially identify the bodies.

However, police said there are "strong indications" that they had been alive for a few days since last being seen near the town of Gillam, Manitoba - which had sparked a massive police search of the area.

Investigators are still looking into the matter "in order to gain more clarity into what happened".

Police say once their review is complete officers will share the findings with the families prior to releasing any information publicly.

McLeod and Schmegelsky had been on the run for almost a month in connection with the killings of three people in northern British Columbia, including Deese and Fowler.

The former fugitives were initially feared missing when their burned-out truck was found July 22 on the side of a remote highway.

RCMP were able to narrow the search for the suspects after investigators discovered items linked to the pair on the shore of the Nelson River, about one kilometre from where their bodies were eventually found.

Investigators, for instance, still are trying to determine a motive - and that will be hard, Hackett said.

Schmegelsky's father, Alan Schmegelsky, said earlier that he expected the nationwide manhunt to end in the death of his son, who he said was on "a suicide mission".

The Yankees had gone ahead on DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly in the top of the inning, but Ottavino (5-4) couldn't make it stand up. Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio scored on the play, putting the Blue Jays ahead of NY 5-4 - a lead they maintained for the victory.

Fowler and Deese had been exploring northern B.C.in Fowler's 1986 blue Chevrolet van with Alberta licence plates, which was found at the scene.

July 17 - The RCMP say the deaths are suspicious.

They were also suspects in the murders of Chynna Deese, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Lucas Fowler, 23, from Sydney, Australia.

Authorities have confirmed Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, died by suicide. The are also captured on security camera footage at a store in Meadow Lake, Sask.

Police have declined to disclose how Dyck died, but said Fowler and Deese were shot.

However, he said it's believed the bodies are those of the suspects.

July 31 - Police announce they have done everything they can and are scaling back the search, although not ending it.

Manitoba RCMP first mentioned the boat on August 4, 2019.

Previously, the RCMP were tight-lipped about details surrounding the autopsies on Schmegelsky and McLeod and an item of interest was found near their bodies.

Deese and Fowler's bodies were found on the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia on July 15.
