Majority of British people support "Brexit by any means", poll finds

Britain will be the 'big losers' in a no deal Brexit, warns European Commission President Boris Johnson criticises EU lack of cooperation on Brexit deal
Steven Clarke | 13 August, 2019, 21:58

During his two-day London visit, Bolton told British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that President Donald Trump wanted to see a successful British exit from the European Union on October 31 and that Washington would be ready to work fast on a U.S. -UK free trade agreement.

Yesterday Mr Johnson updated US President Donald Trump on Brexit during a phone call, Downing Street said.

Johnson spoke to Trump on Monday, discussing Brexit, trade and economic issues, his office said.

Presnted with the statement "The Prime Minister needs to deliver Brexit by any means, including suspending Parliament if necessary, to prevent MPs from stopping it" by polling firm ComRes, 54 per cent of the public signalled their agreement, The Telegraph reports.

Johnson said Tuesday that "In the USA there are all sorts of opportunities we have to open up trade".

He added, "In my experience, the Americans are very tough negotiators indeed and we will do a great deal with them and it will open up opportunities for businesses, particularly services companies in the U.S".

"It will be a tough old haggle but we'll get there", the PM said. But he cautioned that grander claims about a trans-Atlantic free trade deal were premature.

In a report, the IFG said rebel MPs could need to rely on Speaker John Bercow allowing them to amend motions that cannot conventionally be amended.

"The President expressed his appreciation for the United Kingdom's steadfast partnership in addressing global challenges and looks forward to meeting with him (Johnson) personally in the near future, " the White House said.

Mr. Bolton, in London for 2 days of talks, is seeking an improved US-British relationship with Mr. Johnson.

"Most people are trying to avoid having trade deals with the US because they think they'd be disadvantageous", he said. Britain's Parliament has rejected the existing agreement and the European Union refuses to renegotiate, so a no-deal Brexit looks increasingly likely, despite fears it could cause economic turmoil.

European Union leaders are waiting to see if those MPs, including members of Johnson's own Tories, are able to use proceedings in the House of Commons to tie Johnson's hands, according to the person, who declined to be named discussing government thinking.

Johnson has refused to rule out suspending Parliament if legislators try to delay or prevent Brexit.

At a preliminary hearing in the Court of Session in Edinburgh, Lord Doherty agreed to expedite the timetable for the legal challenge to take place, setting the date for the substantive hearing as Friday, September 6.
