Paul said that while waiting for the police to arrive, the blood-soaked attacker was shouting "religious statements".

"He held the knife in the air and started screaming", she said.

Police have confirmed the man also attempted to stab a number of others but there were no other injuries.

"It appears at this stage it was unprovoked however we're keeping a very open mind as we move forward".

Footage shows a woman entering The Rocks Police station with her hand heavily strapped.

"You dog. you stabbed a chick, mate", one of the men yelled at the suspect.

"They were significantly fearless people".

"We have a female person with a stab wound to the back now being treated by paramedics and is en route to a Sydney hospital", police Superintendent Gavin Wood told reporters in Sydney.

'He's definitely been detained. he's been taken away, ' the caller, Tom, said.

A video shows the man jumping onto a auto roof in the middle of the street before being restrained by members of the public with milk crates and chairs.

He has since been arrested, and police have confirmed that one person has been stabbed.

"To approach a person, with clear evidence of a stabbing, these people are heroes".

People were out on the streets in the Sydney CBD having cofee and a bite to eat or shopping when the incident happened. A man is in custody after reportedly going on a rampage in Sydney's CBD.

Police have praised the extraordinary bravery of bystanders who ran towards danger today, confronting a man armed with a knife in Sydney's CBD and preventing potential tragedy.

"Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command are on the scene and will conduct inquiries into whether the incident is linked to an earlier stabbing at a hotel on the corner of Clarence and King streets".
