Hong Kong International Airport was shut down overnight leaving all departing flights grounded after thousands of protesters staged a sit-in in the main terminal. The man Xu identified as a Shenzhen resident was held for about two hours before eventually being taken away in an ambulance.

In a series of tweets, the Tonbridge and Malling MP, said it was a "wrong that needs correcting" and that the situation in Hong Kong was 'worrying'.

As riot police moved into the terminal, they confronted the protesters with pepper spray and swinging batons, finding some entrances barricaded with luggage carts.

It was not immediately clear what the scope of the injunction to remove the protesters would be or how it would be enforced, but technically, the order would become effective once it was posted in a public area at the airport.

Even if no protest is taking place on Wednesday, the previous suspensions of Hong Kong Airport's departures have caused so much disruption to flight plans of airlines, that continuing delays and cancellations of some flights are likely.

Beijing has increasingly pitched the anti-government protests as funded by the West, but has provided little evidence.

Hong Kong's busiest airport has been overrun for the second straight day by angry mobs of protesters putting their lives on the line in the pursuit of democracy.

Mr Trump on Tuesday said his intelligence had confirmed Chinese troops were gathering across the border.

Protesters are demanding that Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam step down and pull legislation that would allow the government to extradite criminal suspects to mainland China, where they would likely face torture or unfair politically charged trials. The editor-in-chief of the state-run Global Times newspaper, Hu Xijin, tweeted that the man was a journalist with the paper.

"My responsibility goes beyond this particular range of protest", Lam said on Tuesday, adding that violence had pushed the territory into a state of "panic and chaos".

In an earlier tweet, Rubio said that the Chinese regime's stance on Hong Kong "is showing the world exactly who they are".

The comments come as fears grow that China may either mobilize troops or take other actions against protesters after they brought air traffic to a halt over the past two days, furthering the economic damage to Asia's financial capital during protests that have raged on since June.

"Everyone should be calm and safe!"

"The Chinese government denied requests for port visits to Hong Kong" by the two vessels, Christensen said.

Earlier, speaking to reporters in New Jersey, Trump said he hoped no one would be killed in the city's protests.

"#China's escalating threats against #HongKong is not an "internal matter", it's a blatant violation of commitment to Hong Kong's autonomy Beijing made in an worldwide treaty" Rubio tweeted on Tuesday.
