Facebook has paid hundreds of contractors to listen to and transcribe snippets of users' conversations, US media reported on Tuesday, amid heightened scrutiny of the social network's data collection practices. The report said the social media giant sent audio of anonymous conversations to at least one California-based company where human employees would listen and transcribe it.

The work has rattled the contract employees, who are not told where the audio was recorded or how it was obtained - only to transcribe it, said the people, who requested anonymity for fear of losing their jobs.

Shares of Facebook pared gains after the report and were up 1.66 per cent at US$188.44 (S$260.92).

Facebook has been paying hundreds of people to listen to users' private audio clips without their knowledge.

In a testimony before Congress a year ago, the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg called it a "conspiracy theory".

Facebook hasn't disclosed to users that third parties may review their audio.

You're talking about this conspiracy theory that gets passed around that we listen to what's going on on your microphone and use that for ads.

Apple and Google have in recent weeks said they've halted the practice, while Amazon gives users the option of blocking the collection of their voice by Alexa, the artificial intelligence driving their Echo voice assistant.

Facebook and invading privacy - name a more iconic duo.

Facebook has come under fire once more, and unsurprisingly, it's because of a breach of privacy.

Facebook claims that it has since stopped this transcription process and "will no longer do so".

Now playing: Watch this: Is Facebook spying on you? Even the list of third parties who might potentially receive users' information doesn't explicitly include human transcription teams, only "vendors and service providers who support our business" by "analyzing how our products are used".
