Nationwide systems outage causing customs delays in South Florida

"CBP officers are working to process travelers as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest levels of security", it said in a second tweet.

One passenger at Dulles posted a video of masses of travelers waiting in snaking lines to reach immigration processing counters at the airport.

The US Customs and Border Protection computer system is down at some airports, creating long lines for arriving global travelers, the agency tweeted Friday afternoon.

"Until such deficiencies are addressed, CBP lacks a means to minimize the possibility and impact of similar system outages in the future", it said.

The outage has already caused major problems at worldwide airports in Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere.

The agency said it would be using "alternative procedures" until the systems were back online.
