The CDC says that as of August 27, there have been 215 possible cases of severe pulmonary disease associated with e-cigarette products in 25 states, including one in Vermont. "No one substance, including Vitamin E acetate, has been identified in all of the samples". While not harmful when ingested or applied to the skin, it can be unsafe when inhaled. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.
USA public health officials warned Americans who aren't already smokers to avoid e-cigarettes and other vaping devices after a mysterious outbreak of a severe lung disease emerged in recent weeks, which has sickened at least 215 people across 25 states and been linked to at least one death.
Investigators at the FDA found vitamin E acetate in samples collected from patients across the country.
The compound is a commonly available nutritional supplement that is not known to be harmful when taken as a vitamin or applied to skin, according to the New York State Department of Health.
Vaping involves inhaling vapour from a device that heats up a liquid that can contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis, or nicotine.
"Some people have been hospitalized in ICU and being on ventilator, intubated and, ultimately, treated with steroids", said Sacramento County Deputy Public Health Officer Dr. Melody Law.
State and federal health officials found an oil-extract from vitamin E, called vitamin E acetate, may have played a role in respiratory problems reported by people who use both marijuana and nicotine vape cartridges, officials told The Washington Post.
