Vegan and vegetarian diets could increase the risk of a stroke, according to new research.
The study, led by Dr Tammy Tong, included information on 48,188 people (average age 45 years) who were recruited between 1993-2001, and had no history of CHD or stroke.
People in the study who ate fish instead of meat, however, had lower risks of heart disease without the increase in stroke.
The researchers said the increased risk of stroke could be down to lower levels of vitamins among the vegetarians and vegans in the study and called for further investigations.
The researchers noted there are 1.7 million vegans and vegetarians living in the United Kingdom and non-meat diets are becoming increasingly popular in part due to the perceived health benefits and concerns about the environment and animal welfare.
In recent years, more and more people have been turning to vegetarian and vegan diets, which is partly due to the perceived health benefits, as well as concerns about the environment and animal welfare.
After taking account of potentially influential factors, such as medical history, smoking, use of dietary supplements and physical activity, pescetarians and vegetarians had a 13% and 22% lower risk of CHD than meat eaters, respectively.
Among the participants, there were 2,820 cases of coronary heart disease (CHD) and 1,072 case of stroke.
"Whether you're a committed carnivore, a veggie, or a vegan, one way to reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases is to ensure you're eating a balanced diet, packed with plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds".
However, researchers found that vegetarians and vegans were a fifth more likely to suffer a stroke than meat eaters, which they suggest may be partly due to a lack of vitamins. About 500 of the strokes were caused by blood clots in the brain (ischemic stroke) and 300 resulted from bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke).
"Evidence suggests that vegetarians might have different disease risks compared to non-vegetarians", the researchers said.
Since "stroke is a much rarer event than heart disease", the lower risk of heart disease may actually be the more impactful finding, Tong says. "For those who do eat meat, cutting back to less than 90g of red or processed meat a day is advised". The remaining people were either vegetarians or vegans, who were grouped together for the purposes of the study.
