Apple has announced the launch of its new gaming platform which is built into its App Store - Apple Arcade. The firm launched the product earlier this year in March as a way of leveraging its large app store to capture the attention of gamers. Players will also be able to watch game trailers and get access to "expert editorial content" like sneak peeks and game guides. That includes exclusive titles like Konami's Frogger in Toy Town andCapcom's Shinsekai: Into the Depths.
At its big iPhone launch event on Tuesday, Apple dropped details about Apple Arcade. "We are working with some of the most innovative game developers in the world to create over 100 new and exclusive games to play across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV". The service also launches for Apple TV on September 30 and MacOS Catalina in October, giving those platforms a lot more to play with as well.
What just happened?Apple's Arcade and TV Plus subscriptions will make their proper debuts on September 19th and November 1st, respectively.
It's heartening to see Apple take an interest in promoting high-quality games with artistic value.
By offering a lower subscription fee, it's likely that Apple is trying to find a competitive foothold in a pretty packed market - with the likes of Xbox Games Pass and PS Now already out there, and Google Stadia on the way, even Apple Arcade could have trouble becoming established. Plus, it looks like most of the "exclusive" titles are only timed-exclusives rather than permanently, as numerous games we've seen planned to hit the service so far have also previously been teased for other platforms, too. Current Apple device owners won't be grandfathered into the deal.
