Peace talks had been meant to debate the withdrawal of United States troops from Afghanistan, a prerequisite for peace within the nation.

'I've by no means believed take care of the Taliban is both straightforward or imminent, ' Senator Marco Rubio stated.

U.S. Marine General Kenneth McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, said during a visit to Afghanistan that the Taliban overplayed its hand in the peace negotiations by carrying out a spate of high profile attacks, including one that killed a U.S. soldier last week.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks prompted the USA -led invasion of Afghanistan, which toppled the Taliban regime. The cancellation put a spotlight on the September 28 presidential election.

However, whether because of last week's killing of a U.S. soldier, as he says, or due to wider misgivings, that goal now appears in tatters. "The President is right to end the talks".

He urged the parties to the conflict and all those interested in peace to keep working to bring about direct talks.

The Afghani government had been critical of any sort of peace agreement, largely because the Taliban had demanded Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani be shut out of the negotiations. The only certainty is that the violence in Afghanistan, which has not stopped for a day, will continue.

Yamamoto said security, voter turnout and fraud are major challenges for the presidential election.

Tallon wants USA troops home, and she really wants the US government to do more to probe allegations, which she and others have raised in a lawsuit, that Saudi government employees knowingly assisting the hijacking plot.

Yamamoto said 9.6 million people have registered to vote, but turnout could be affected by security worries.

In this light, the United Nations envoy said credible elections would provide an important political foundation for the future of the country as well as legitimacy and authority to the elected president, which would be important in view of the expected peace process.

Afghanistan's U.N. Ambassador Adela Raz told the council that the government is committed to ensuring a "transparent, free, credible and inclusive process" and that election preparations are on-track.

"They did a mistake", Trump said of the Taliban's deadly bomb attack.

There was no immediate comment from Afghan officials.
