"All the evidence shows that talking to people in the right way decreases the chances of suicide and that's what this course will teach you to do".

The Americas meanwhile was the only region that showed an uptick in suicides, with a 6 percent hike over the six-year period.

"Every death is a tragedy for family, friends and colleagues. We call on all countries to incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programs in a sustainable way", said WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

World Health Organization statistics show that close to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is almost one person every 40 seconds, and for every suicide there are more than 20 suicide attempts.

More than 5,300 people have had face-to-face appointments with Pieta's suicide-prevention service this year.

Most suicides happen in low- and middle-income countries, where most of the global population lives, but rates are higher in wealthier countries.

According to ISAP, suicide is amongst the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. Among teenagers aged 15-19 years, suicide was the second leading cause of death among girls (after maternal conditions) and the third leading cause of death in boys (after road injury and interpersonal violence).

Most of the suicide victims have taken their lives by hanging themselves, while others by consuming poison, jumping from heights and drowning. "In Sri Lanka, for instance, bans are thought to have led to 93,000 fewer suicide deaths between 1995 and 2015".

"In order to save lives, we must be unified in our suicide prevention efforts", said DHS Secretary-designee Andrea Palm.
