House of Commons Speaker John Bercow Will Step Down Amid Brexit Chaos
11 September, 2019, 12:26
Lloyd Russell-Moyle (Brighton Kemptown) appeared to try to hold on to Speaker John Bercow at the point he was requested to lead MPs to the Lords, with doorkeepers intervening.
The House of Commons' iconic Speaker John Bercow announced he'll step down on October 31, or sooner if an early election is held.
Speaker John Bercow was almost blocked from leaving his seat as Remainers attempted to sensationally block the proroguing of Parliament.
"He's contravened some conventions and for that, it means his legacy is somewhat in doubt, really, as whether it's a positive or negative".
Also in the mix to replace Bercow as Speaker is veteran Labour MP Harriet Harman, a QC and former minister who has chaired the Joint Committee on Human Rights since 2017.
The Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 introduced fixed-term elections to the Westminster parliament for the first time, as a result of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition agreement which was produced after the 2010 general election.
"I think what Parliament has to do, and the Speaker has to do, is to ensure that Parliament can have its say. and that is what John Bercow has sought to do".
"He wants to make sure a Remain Parliament elects his successor and before that he is hanging around to oversee the process when the Prime Minister comes back from the summit of European Union leaders".
Mr Bercow was given a standing ovation after his speech, although the Conservative front bench did not stand.
When the Queen's official approval to prorogue Parliament was announced, the anti-Brexit Labour Party erupted with disdain and disapproval.
Mr Bercow said he wanted the election for the next speaker to happen "when all members have some knowledge of the candidates".
The new vote followed a stormy parliamentary session, in which opposition leaders accused Johnson of calling an election to secure Brexit without an agreement on October 31.
He will step down on October 31, the day the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the EU.
Boris Johnson's bid for an early general election was once again rejected by MPs, while a Bill aimed at preventing a no-deal Brexit was made law. With Bercow, it looks as though Brexit has claimed another political career.
