Reports now suggest the former F1 champion has been taken to Pompidou hospital in south-west Paris to have a stem cell transfusion carried out by French surgeon Philippe Menasche, according to Le Parisien newspaper.

"The treatment will begin on Tuesday morning and he will leave the establishment on Wednesday", reported Le Parisien, which claims that Schumacher has already been treated by Professor Menasche in Paris twice last spring.

The health of the seven-time Formula 1 has been a closely-guarded secret since his skiing accident in 2013 which left him with severe head injuries.

The racing legend was on holiday with his 14-year-old son, Mick, when tragedy struck in December 2013. The Paris hospitals division, contacted by AFP, refused to substantiate or deny the information citing medical privateness legal guidelines.

While the details of Schumacher's treatment aren't clear, the use of stem cells in the F1 legend's treatment plan isn't out of the question given his doctor's specialization.

Schumacher's condition stabilised after he was placed in a drug-induced coma, from which he later emerged.

Schumacher, 50, the winningest driver in Formula One history, was admitted to the Georges Pompidou Hospital under an assumed name on Monday. The sporting ace was then relocated back to his home in 2014, where he continues to receive medical treatment.

But, writing in his forthcoming book, Nick Fry, who worked alongside Schumacher for three years at Mercedes, believes the sporadic offerings about a driver who won a record seven world championships, 91 grands prix, and commanded a following of millions around the world, are not enough.

On Schumacher's 50th birthday, the family released a statement reassuring his many fans worldwide concerned for his welfare, that he was in "the very best of hands". His first two titles were with Benetton in 1994 and 1995 before going on to win five in a row with Ferrari between 2000-2004.

"Once in a long discussion Michael said to me: 'You don't need to call me for the next year, I'm disappearing'".
