"Our military is observing the situation and maintaining readiness", the JCS sad.

The US president said he fired John Bolton on Tuesday, citing differences of opinion on how to tackle the diplomatic impasse with Pyongyang, as well as similarly hard positions with regard to Afghanistan and Iran.

The leaders agreed to resume working-level talks during their impromptu meeting on June 30 on the Korean border, but no date has been set.

"We have a willingness to sit with the USA for comprehensive discussion of the issues we have so far taken up, at a time and place to be agreed, late in September", First Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said in a statement carried by official media.

U.S. President Donald Trump has previously dismissed North Korea short-range missile tests, calling the tests "very standard" and not a provocation that threatens the United States. The previous seven launches have revealed short-range missile and rocket artillery systems that experts say would potentially expand its capabilities to strike targets throughout South Korea, including USA military bases there.

In August, two projectiles were launched.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw Tuesday's testing of a super-large multiple rocket launcher, state propaganda organ KCNA said late Tuesday. We wish that he would stop that.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho has called Pompeo a "diehard toxin of US diplomacy" who employs "hackneyed sanctions rhetoric".

Before departing the White House for a rally in North Carolina, Trump said he was aware of the North Korean offer but did not say he would accept.

"We believe North Korea is upgrading its (missile) technology by repeatedly firing missiles", said Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya.
