In a shocker, Team USA lost to France 89-79 in the quarterfinals in Dongguan, China. All summer, good players withdrew with regularity, and heading into the tournament, it was clear this was the least-talented US team to enter global competition in quite some time.

The U.S. led by seven points in the fourth quarter after being down by as much as 10 early in the second half. The U.S. will clearly have to make some major tweaks to the roster before the Olympics get underway. France capitalised on that and were led by the exceptional Rudy Gobert, as well as Evan Fournier and Frank Ntilikina.

France, who were beaten late by The Boomers last start, rode the impressive outings of National Basketball Association duo Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier, who combined for 43 points to pace the French unit.

France will play Argentina in the semi-finals on Friday, with Spain taking on either Australia or the Czech Republic in the other match.

Mitchell finished with a game-high 29 points for Team USA and was on pace to eclipse Kevin Durant's single-game record of 38 against Lithuania at the 2010 World Championship.

If there's any silver living to this year's FIBA World Cup for the United States, it's that it was able to qualify for next year's Olympic games in Japan before being eliminated from medal contention.
