Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Gough each won two matches to help Britain and Ireland take a 7-5 lead over the United States on Saturday in the Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

Trailing 7-5 overnight, the visitors won two-and-a-half points from the morning foursomes before claiming six of the first seven singles matches to secure victory with three matches still to finish.

Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Purcell embrace after scoring the first point of the day beating United States of America during day one of the 2019 Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake. And John Augenstein and Andy Ogletree, 2 up with four to play, hung on for a halve with Sandy Scott and Euan Walker.

The 20-year-old recovered with birdies at the fourth and sixth holes to return the match to all-square and was two-up with three holes to play after winning the 14 and 15.

After Isaiah Salinda triumphed by two holes against Alex Fitzpatrick, the two sides were level at 9½-9½, before Stewart Hagestad, who was a member of the winning American team two years ago, nudged his side in front after dominating against Harry Hall to win 5&3.

Although they dropped a hole at the 12, a birdie on the 15 restored their two-hole lead and they never looked back to give the visiting team its second point.

Augenstein hit back for the Americans with a 2&1 win over Ireland's Conor Purcell making it 4-3 in the match overall.

She has nailed every role she has signed on to be, and would definitely be a valued addition to the MCU. The character went on to be featured in the 2012 Hawkeye comic book, which saw her train under Barton.

Crosby has remained confident in regard to the two, which is why he'll send them out in the final two singles matches - Hammer will face Purcell in the penultimate match while Fisk will be in the anchor spot opposite Sloman.

"I honestly thought that these guys would let their talent come to the surface", said USA captain Nathaniel Crosby.

After being left out in the morning, world No 1 Cole Hammer was sent out first by Crosby against Fitzpatrick while there was also a first taste of action for Amateur champion James Sugrue against Pak.

"This afternoon I just could not believe the amount of putts Great Britain and Ireland made in the first 45 minutes".

As for the presence of his brother, Fitzpatrick added: "I saw him sneak under the ropes on one of the tees and I was tempted to go and tell him to get back with everyone else but I let him off with that one".

Pak finished with the best record of the weekend, 3-0-0, while Scott led Great Britain and Ireland at 2-1-1.
