Opponents promise Supreme Court decision won't be last word on asylum

The United States Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration on Wednesday in the legal fight over its restrictive policy requiring Central American asylum seekers to apply for asylum in Mexico first before attempting to do so in the U.S.

The policy declares ineligible for asylum any migrants who enter the United States from the southern border and who have not asked for asylum protection in any of the countries they crossed to get to there.

The justices' order late Wednesday temporarily undoes a lower-court ruling that had blocked the new asylum policy in some states along the southern border.

Sotomayor's dissent - joined by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg - argued that Trump's asylum ban represents a radical overturning of our longstanding offer of safe refuge to the persecuted, without public input.

He also said things were looking better for the ratification of a new free trade agreement between US, Mexico and Canada. "We reiterate that any person fleeing violence or persecution must be able to access full and effective asylum procedures and worldwide protection", Mahecic said.

The new policy would severely curtail asylum claims by migrants from Central American countries, now pouring over the U.S. border in large numbers.

Democrats said the ruling puts people's lives at risk.

The rule would bar nearly all immigrants from applying for asylum at the southern border.

Under another Trump administration policy, introduced in January, more than 40,000 asylum seekers have been forced to wait in Mexico while their cases wind through the clogged American immigration courts.

"This lawsuit has been proceeding on three tracks: In this court, the parties have litigated the government's stay request".

Trump hints at gun background check action
Trump, he noted, had long ago said he would veto the House-passed background check bill. Manchin was referring to legislation he and Sen.

Others said they would try to make it in Mexico, despite the violence, or in Guatemala, a nation with a barely functional asylum system.

The policy affects people who travel to the USA through Mexico from Central America.

Curbing migration levels has been a key goal of Donald Trump's presidency and forms a major part of his bid for re-election in 2020.

This would effectively end asylum seeking at the border by people from the region, an indefensible retreat on our commitment to the global humanitarian principle that people fleeing horrific conditions have the right to appeal here for refuge - and get a fair hearing.

"Just like when they thought they were going to deter asylum seekers from coming by taking away their children at the border, we suspect this will not deter people", he said.

With this policy in place, it doesn't take much of an imagination to see human-smuggling rings turning to ships to deposit asylum seekers on USA soil without crossing through Mexico, in the process recreating in the Gulf of Mexico the kind of problems Europe is facing from migrants sailing across the Mediterranean from North Africa.

Now, with the Supreme Court allowing the asylum rule to go into effect, some feel the United States got what it wanted anyway - without the other countries' consent.

"The president of Nicaragua is friends with the president of Honduras, and what the Honduran president could do is send all of the Nicaraguans back to their country", he said.

Morgan said the Trump administration is "doing everything that they can" to address what he described as the crisis on the US border with Mexico.
