Dick's Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack is not blinking an eye over his company's decision to pull "assault-style rifles" from its shelves despite profit losses, and is even bragging that his firm turned $5 million worth of leftover inventory into scrap metal.

The company could have resold the guns to another retailer or returned them to the manufacturer, but it didn't, Stack said, according to CBS.

The move comes after Dick's made the decision past year to stop carrying the rifles following the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the left 17 people dead. He announced that firearms would no longer be sold to anyone under 21, a decision that he says led to the company losing "about a quarter of a billion" dollars.

Walmart stopped selling certain types of ammunition and banned customers from openly carrying weapons in its stores last month in the wake of a mass shooting at one of its locations in El Paso, Texas.

Elaborating on why he eliminated the weapons that he elected not to sell, Stack added: "I said, 'You know what?" The February 2018 shooting killed 17 people and injured 17 others, with survivors angry over inaction on gun control policy.

"Even though it wasn't the gun he used", Stack said.

Ed Stack told CBS the chain - one of the largest gun retailers in the country - made the decision after he found out the Parkland shooter had purchased a shotgun from a Dick's store.

"So many people say to me, you know, 'If we do what you want to do, it's not going to stop these mass shootings, '" Stack told Cowan.

"My response is: 'You're probably right, it won't, '" Stack told CBS. "If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them, '" he explained. Walmart stopped selling AR-15s in 2015 and in August they chose to stop selling some types of ammunition.

"We didn't expect to get what we got", Stack said.

'As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same, ' he said, referring to the El Paso and OH shootings. Dick's Sporting Goods operated 727 locations across the U.S.as of August 3.
