In 2018, there were 25,344 cases of syphilis reported in the state, a 265% increase from 10 years ago.

"We're documenting an increase in STDs for the fifth consecutive year", said Elizabeth Torrone, an epidemiologist with the CDC. And there were 79,397 cases of gonorrhea, 211% more than 10 years ago.

Together these 3 sexually transmitted diseases accounted for over 2.4 million cases in America, this represents an all time record high on all three conditions since data was first collected in 1984.

As a result, the numbers of newborns who died from congenital syphilis increased 22 percent from 2017 to 2018 - from 77 to 94 deaths. STDs drive a substantial portion of new HIV transmission, and the STD prevention infrastructure, including public clinics across the USA, is critical to the success of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative - for delivering testing and prevention services, including access to PrEP.

The health agency noted an increase across the three most commonly reported STDs between 2017 and 2018, wherein more than 115,000 syphilis cases were reported, more than 580,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported, and a whopping 1.7 million cases of chlamydia were reported.

According to Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, "STDs can come at a high cost for babies and other vulnerable populations".

The rise in STDs and failure to adequately support prevention programs also threatens our nation's Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative. "The public's health is in danger". "It takes a village, and we need all sectors really involved in trying to reverse these trends".

"The resurgence of syphilis, and particularly congenital syphilis, is not an arbitrary event, but rather a symptom of a deteriorating public health infrastructure and lack of access to health care", Gail Bolan, the CDC's director of STD Prevention, said in the report. "Without a radical shift in how we prioritize sexual health in the United States, we can only expect things to get worse".

Chlamydia had the most cases a year ago with 232,181, up 56% over the past decade.

Those cases rose 36% between 2017 and 2018. Congenital syphilis has increased 185% since 2014 to 1,306 cases. You can't tell if a person is infected just by how they look, sometimes there may be no visible signs.
