Controversy builds over Trump's Minneapolis rally

Most cities never bother to send a bill assuming politicians won't pay. Duluth ate $69,000 in police costs for a Trump rally last year Jacob Frey, Minneapolis mayor, trying to shut down Donald Trump rally, campaign says

President Donald Trump's re-election campaign blasted Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and said he was "attempting to extort" the campaign with a "phony" bill for security in an effort to stop a presidential rally slated for Thursday.

President Trump called Tuesday for Minneapolis voters to "dump" Mayor Jacob Frey - as well as Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. - amid an escalating battle over a rally Trump plans to hold at the city's Target Center arena this Thursday.

The Target Center, the home of the NBA's Timberwolves, then attempted to pass that bill along to the Trump campaign "under threat of withholding the use of the arena", the Trump statement said. The Trump 2020 campaign is due to rally in Minneapolis on October 9 but a dispute with the city's Target Center over security threatens the event.

Frey wants the Trump campaign to foot the bill for $530,000 in additional costs the city estimates it will incur because of Thursday's rally.

A representative of Segal's office told an editorial writer in a Tuesday e-mail that the city hasn't previously charged campaigns for rallies held in the city.

Many cities have sent invoices to the Trump campaign after his rallies are over, asking for reimbursement for tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for such things as staff overtime, traffic control, and extra law enforcement. Its law firm threatened to sue AEG if the rally doesn't proceed.

Your position is clearly wrong under the plain wording of the contract. They insisted they have a contract with the city and if it doesn't comply, it can expect a lawsuit. "Neither the Campaign nor AEG is responsible for arranging or paying for rally-related security", the letter states.

The City's demand is particularly ridiculous in view of the fact that the security cost for President Obama's 2009 appearance at the Target Center was reported to be $20,000, 1/26th of what Frey is trying to charge President Trump. The Campaign can not be in breach of an obligation it does not owe to AEG. Kroll told Fox News that "Cops for Trump" shirts that were made up in response are selling out.

After Trump announced his intent to visit the city, Frey said in a statement that while there was "no legal mechanism to prevent the president from visiting, his message of hatred will never be welcome in Minneapolis".

This is one more example out of thousands of how the Democratic Party is violating every norm that makes non-violent civic life possible.
