Johnson told to stop playing 'stupid' Brexit blame game

Boris Johnson is trying to negotiate a new Brexit deal with just three weeks to go before Brexit, and has set out new proposals to avoid a hard border in Ireland - the main difference from Theresa May's plan is that according to Johnson, Northern Ireland would leave the EU's customs union along with the rest of the United Kingdom and stay in parts of its single market.

Britain's Parliament is set to be suspended from this evening, leaving an European Union summit next week as the focus for traders, who may see it as a last chance to strike a deal before the October 31 departure date set by Johnson.

According to a bill passed by lawmakers last month, Johnson must request a Brexit delay if no deal is agreed upon by 19 October, but the prime minister has made it clear he would look for ways to circumvent Parliament's instructions.

Political commentators went into overdrive after an early morning telephone call between British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Varadkar said Ireland can't accept a deal at any cost as Britain seeks to renegotiate plans meant to ensure there is no hard border between the Republic of Ireland and the U.K.'s Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is preparing a dramatic sitting of the United Kingdom parliament on Saturday 19 October, in what is being billed as a last-ditch attempt to avoid having to request a Brexit delay from Brussels.

The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg says these could include leaving without a deal, and halting Brexit altogether.

Mr Gove's comments were supported by speaker John Bercow, who added: "I must say to the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster that statement will be very warmly welcome across the House, but also by a great many outside this place, whatever their views on Brexit".

Leo Varadkar, prime minister of the Republic of Ireland, said on Tuesday night: "I think it's going to be very hard to secure an agreement by next week, quite frankly".

While Berlin had not given up hope, she said the chances of a no-deal exit were rising again as the nature of the UK's proposals made any compromise very hard.

But he added: "I don't play dirty and I don't think most European Union leaders do either".

Mr Varadkar and Boris Johnson are expected to meet for further Brexit talks later this week.

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said that if the negotiations failed, "the explanation will be found in the British camp (because) the original sin is found on the islands and not on the continent".

Varadkar was keen to stress, however, that while he would "certainly work until the very last moment" to secure a deal, it would not be at "any cost" to Ireland, Northern Ireland or the rest of Europe.

The news comes following the publication of a leaked government source which claims that Johnson will do "all sorts of things" to prevent a further delay to Brexit.

But should a delay still be granted at the European Union summit, Johnson will campaign for a "no-deal" in a snap general election, the Downing Street source told The Spectator, which supports the ruling Conservative party.

The UK has said the European Union needs to "move quickly" to stop it leaving without an agreement at the end of the month.

Jane Foley, a senior foreign exchange strategist at Rabobank, said the Guardian article showed "the odds increasing of a delay until summer next year". He has also repeatedly demanded an election but parliament has refused to grant one.
