Two people killed and several injured in Germany street shooting

At least two people have been killed in a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle, police say.

Pictures from the scene showed a body lying in the street behind a police cordon.

Police spokeswoman Ulrike Diener said there were also reports of injured people and that multiple suspects were believed to have fled the scene.

Police say two people were killed in Halle on Wednesday but many details remain unclear. A person interviewed on n-tv television said that he had been in a kebab shop when he saw a man with a helmet and military jacket, who he said fired shots into the shop.

An update later confirmed that police arrested one person but residents were encouraged to stay alert.

"Our forces have detained one person", a tweet from the police said.

The shooting took place in an area in Halle known as Paulus.

Speaking to German broadcaster MDR, the eyewitnesses spoke of the attackers having several weapons when they launched their assault.

It wasn't clear what he was shooting at.

Bild newspaper reported that the attack took place in front of a synagogue and the attackers also threw a hand grenade at a Jewish cemetery.
